Review
“Hansen and Christensen, two experienced consultants, explain that business can
prosper while also being ecologically correct. This provocative book is
especially suited for teachers and graduate students in business, the sociology
of organizations, or economic development.”–Choice
"This book should be read by all business people and teachers of business, law,
ecology and psychology. It will certainly help prepare all for the future
challenges of global management in the 21st century." - Barry Roberts, Professor
of Law and Ethics Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina
"Considering the pace of technological development and growth of the world
population, explicit thinking about the ecological aspects of any major business
cannot be delayed. This book is an excellent contribution to an increasing
awareness." - Nico Noort, senior manager of Business Development PTT Telecom,
Netherlands
"Organizational Ecology, as it is presented in this book, represents a genuine
contribution and a powerful practical tool for the management of change and
change processes. It represents a must for serious consultants and managers in
the competitive European environment of our time." - Dr. Ing W. Sihn, director
and head of General Department for Company Management, Fraunhofer Institute for
Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA, Stuttgart, Germany
"This book represents an interesting approach to the relationship between
business and ecology, in the light of present realities and mentality. It is a
hard task and great mission to find a harmonious coexistence for these seemingly
contradictory concepts. Hopefully, this work, emphasizing ethics in our business
and profit-oriented environment, will contribute to the realization of a vision
for green prosperity. For the countries which are now entering the community of
high technology, placing all their efforts of infrastructural development, the
ideas expressed in the book could assist them in balancing technological
progress with harmony with the environment, and even to avoid problems faced by
their predecessors." - Professor Dr. Sci. G. Zintelis Minister of Communications
and
Informatics Member of Lithuanian Academy of Sciences
Book Description
Business and ecology, Hansen and Christensen assert, are bound together in ways
few yet recognize. Ecology represents a true megatrend of increasing strength--a
megatrend that impacts new products and production methods, new markets and
marketing, new legislation, and new business ethics and business structures. In
fact, they contend, a whole new focus from business is emerging--and even more:
a new world view. This book presents and discusses an ecological world view and
applies it to all aspects of business from opportunities for profit to ethics.
Hansen and Christensen present a novel application of ecological reasoning: they
show that ecosystems theory lays down premises for a promising theory of change
and resistance to change in the area of management and organization. Further,
knowledge about ancient man, as he evolved in his ecological niche, is shown to
be vital for an understanding and ability to handle interhuman challenges and
general problems in modern enterprises. This book challenges the existing
contributions from business and industry to the general efforts to solve global
environmental problems. The authors point out degrees of "greening" and discount
the blind faith in the benefits of sustainable growth. This book will be of
interest to managers on all levels of business, as well as those involved in
public/economic policy issues, and to students and scholars of business
administration.
